The Huruma Project

With their property lease running out, the Huruma Orphanage was facing eviction which could have resulted in the orphans living there becoming homeless with nowhere to go. To prevent this from happening, together with the Woodford Catholic Parish, we raised sufficient funds to purchase the land and buildings for the Orphanage and in doing so have secured the charity's future for generations to come.

About the Huruma Project

Our team have each been tasked with personally raising £1500 to support the project. They have been working hard to come up with innovative ways to raise the funds including selling food, doing maintenance work for neighbours, raffles, walking challenges and more. Tap the squares below to find out more about their activities.
The Huruma Orphanage was set up in 2012 and looks after children between the ages of 4 and 17. Most have been orphaned following the death of one or both parents, often as a result of aids or other life-threatening illnesses. The orphanage takes in these children and provides basic education, vocational training and a safe place to live. They also help the children to integrate back into society and to find work when they are old enough to do so.
In 2023, 12 volunteers from Capital International Group headed to the Huruma Orphanage to assist with construction work and meet the children. Ahead of the trip, collectively the team raised more than £22,000 to donate to the orphanage. The volunteer programme was a huge success with the funds used to secure the future of the orphanage and help it to become self sufficient.

Meet the volunteers

For the 2024 trip, colleagues from across the business were invited to apply for a place on the programme. The successful candidates are now busy fundraising and preparing for their time at the orphanage.

Life is fragile and time isn’t guaranteed, so we must make the most out of the time we have and I’d like to do all I can to leave this world a little more hopeful. I’ll be completing 3 challenges; 1) a solo, suspended bike ride 2) the Altenar Half Marathon in Ramsey and 3) climbing Kilimanjaro in Tanzania with some of my fellow volunteers.
I am always keen to learn and get to impact unfamiliar territories and cultures. I did research as part of my Master’s program relevant to ESG / Corporate sustainability – so I am keen to actively be part of a venture that has ESG components linked to its drive. The volunteers from South Africa will be organising a Padel event to raise funds.

Being able to take part in this amazing initiative goes to the heart of being part of the Capital family. Having chatted to colleagues who were lucky enough to take part last year, each and every one said it was simply life changing, something that they will never forget. I hope that I can also come away with a better perspective on life that I can share with others back on the Isle of Man and encourage further participation.
After speaking to the volunteers from last year and hearing the impact they made on the Orphanage, the kids lives and their own lives it was definitely something I wanted to do. As well as fundraising amongst my friends and family, I'm also doing office events such as sweepstakes, Friday sausage baps, summer football, a quiz night and a raffle with prizes from local businesses.
I love that Capital is interested in providing so much more than just financial aid to the orphanage, and that there’s a real focus on sustainability and self-sufficiency for the community. I’m planning on hosting a quiz night  to raise money, but to kick start my fundraising I’m raffling a York Ghost Merchant ghost! So far, I’ve managed to sell more than £400 worth of tickets in 24 hours!)
I was motivated to volunteer for the trip as it is a once in a lifetime experience which not only gives me the opportunity to explore the world but also enables me to give back to the community in a meaningful way. I am walking the 2024 Parish Walk in aid of the Huruma Orphanage where I am raising money through my JustGiving page.
One of the primary reasons I decided to volunteer was to gain firsthand insight into the lives of those less fortunate. As someone in my early twenties, I’ve been fortunate to lead a relatively easy-going life. Volunteering provides me with an opportunity to truly appreciate my blessings and understand the challenges faced by others. I am currently running a tuck shop in the office as well as selling sausage baps.
Three years ago, I was fortunate enough to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. Whilst in Arusha, we spent a day with the children at the Huruma Orphanage. I was amazed by the resilience of the children and staff alike, all struggling to survive in immensely challenging circumstances. I knew immediately that supporting the Orphanage would have a tremendously positive impact on the children living there. I can’t wait to get back to Huruma this year to repeat the experience for everyone a second time.

The trip represents a fantastic opportunity to make a tangible difference in the lives of the children resident at the orphanage. To raise the required funds, I will be arranging a gig this summer featuring some popular Island based bands, which will be a great opportunity to raise money for the orphanage through ticket sales, but will also be a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the success  of the initiative so far.
